About Family Provisions West Philly

At a time when food production is ultra-processed and mass-manufactured; when nutritious, uncomplicated, and affordable foods aren’t always accessible; and families are too stretched-thin to manage their dietary health -  preparing homemade, from-scratch, and accessible food is a form of community activism.

Family Provisions believes that nutritious and delicious food is fundamental to the health and resilience of individuals, families and communities. We view wellness holistically, and incorporate a diversity of traditions and modalities into our cooking and food products.

As a small, woman-owned business, we support and embrace a diversity of identities, diets, health and wellness goals, nutritional preferences and needs, and cultural traditions. We are continually learning - from science, from our ancestors, from the natural world, and amongst others both near and far - to enjoy and make use of blended cuisines, medicines, and wisdoms.

We reject the mainstream consumerism, Capitalism, and individualism that keep us alienated and disconnected from ourselves, from each other, and from the natural world. We acknowledge interconnectedness across cultural, generational, and geographic divides.

Meet Casey

Family Provisions was dreamed up in 2017 as a career-life configuration allowing me to support my small family as a single-parent-by-choice, while leveraging my love of cooking, knowledge of principles of nutrition, and passion for community health and wellness. I started informally as a part-time home-cook and childcare provider for friends and neighbors in Brooklyn, NY, while continuing to work as an adjunct professor of sociology, advisor, and nonprofit consultant. In 2020, I decided to transition from teaching and moved my son and I to Philadelphia, where I eventually founded Family Provisions West Philly.

This business represents an alternative to mainstream capitalist principles that justify our work-life imbalance. It allows me to pursue and share my interests in cuisine and cooking, my love for the families and children of West Philly and its environs, and wellness, while making a small living, having a modicum of flexibility and a healthy work-life balance. I’m syked to collaborate with others likewise interested in alternative models of work, family, and community.

I have a Bachelor’s of Arts from Bennington College, and a Master’s in International Affairs from The New School University.

I am ServSafe certified in both Food Handling and Food Management.
